Southern Rhone wine tours

Southern Rhone
In the seventy or so kilometres between Montélimar and Avignon, the Rhone valley becomes positively bucolic and redolent of a Schubert symphony. The wine-making area is spread out over a countryside becoming more and more Provençal. Here the climate is Mediterranean - hot, breezy, dry. Unlike in the north, the river itself is not much more than a reference point. Also unlike the north, there is a range of grape varieties grown. Grenache is the key red varietal and Grenache blanc for the whites, though almost all wines are blends. One of the great delights of wine tours in this region is the small-town based nature of winemaking - Gigondas, Vacqueyras, Carpentras, Cairanne, Ste-Cécile-les-Vignes to name but a few are all worth a visit just for a stroll and a lungful of Provençe air - add a tasting of their lovely wines and you have a glorious experience.
